Native machine promises solutions for paddy farmers

Thoubal, July 01 2025:
A locally-developed mini threshing machine, capable of operating efficiently in waterlogged paddy fields with minimal resources, has been introduced to the public.
The machine is the brainchild of 44-year-old Ahongsangbam Sanatomba of Ningombam Utha Leirak in Thoubal district.
Powered by a mini petrol engine, the machine stands out for its ability to perform wide range of functions generally featured in conventionally larger threshing machines.
One of the key features of the invention is its efficiency.
The machine can thresh a full 'sangam' of paddy held area consuming only three litres of petrol.

Designed to float and operate even in waterlogged fields, the mini threshing machine offers a practical solution for areas where traditional harvesting methods are challenging.
Weighing light enough to be carried by two-three persons, it can also be easily transported by attaching it to a scooter or carrying it on a boat - making it particularly suitable for farmers in remote or hard-to-access areas, including those cultivating in lakes and wetlands.
Unlike manual harvesting, which typically requires the labour of at least six people, the machine can be operated efficiently by just two to three persons significantly cutting down both labour and operational costs.
Speaking to media persons at the launch of the machine, Sanatomba informed that the machine was developed with the primary aim of supporting farmers who struggle financially or face issues and difficulties in harvesting paddy for one reason or the other.
Sanatomba shared that he has been inventing agricultural and utility machines since 2019, including items such as a chaff cutter machine, wheelbarrow, chain-link fencing tools, an exercise cycle and a mini rice mill.
Among these, the chaff machine has seen the highest demand, with over 100 units already sold.
Describing the mini threshing machine, Sanatomba said that it is built using a single empty oil barrel fitted with an engine sourced from a water pump, making it both functional and affordable.
"It took more than a year of continuous efforts to complete the invention," he said.
Sanatomba assured that though the manufacturing cost is around Rs 1 lakh, it would be made available at a slightly lower market price.
"Once ordered, the machine can be delivered within two months," he maintained.
As of now, Sanatomba has not received any funding from the government to run his local factory.
He stated that with government support, he would be able to expand his business and create employment opportunities for skilled individuals.
He also mentioned that his factory is preparing to launch several new machines, including an electric sand sieving machine and a fan that operates without electricity.
